Welcome to Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is the main beach in Portimão but it is also a bustling holiday resort in its own right. It became a tourist centre at the end of the 19th century, when it was the favoured summer resort of families from, not only Portimão, but also the rest of the Algarve and Andalusia; and in the winter with English visitors. The Hotel da Bela Vista with its Belle Epoque architecture, dates from this time and stands out amongst the modern buildings along the beach front.

The beach itself is vast, even in the middle of summer there is always plenty of space. The avenue, Tomás Cabreira, which runs along the top of the beach, is full of restaurants, cafes, and shops and is particularly lively at night with a variety of bars, and clubs to choose from. At the end of the avenue is the Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar, which was part of Portimão's defences against corsairs and pirates. It was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and gives a wonderful view of the beach and the cliffs on one side and the marina on the other.

Information & Facts

There are lots of things to do in Praia da Rocha for the whole family to enjoy! The lovely Praia da Rocha beach has plenty of room for everyone, even in the height of summer, and there are places to eat and other facilities along its length so you can stay on the beach all day! There are all types of water sports on offer and boat trips to the caves, fishing trips and dolphin watching. At night the bars, nightclubs and restaurants liven up the Avenida Tomás Cabreira that runs along the top of the beach and there is also the Casino for a nightly show, dinner and dancing as well as the gaming rooms.

Eating Out

There is plenty of fresh fish coming in on the boats to Portimão every morning and with ideal conditions for clams, oysters and cockles in the river estuary in Alvor - fish and seafood is definitely top of the menu in Praia da Rocha. There are numerous different ways of cooking the fish, whether it is a simple dish like grilled sardines with a tomato salad, a cataplana marisco (seafood and fish cooked in the traditional clam shaped copper vessel)or a  fish or seafood risotto. Even with all the fresh fish around there is almost certain to be a 'bacalhau' (dried, salt cod) dish as well.

Chicken piri-piri (barbecued chicken with a fiery pepper sauce) is almost as much a part of the Algarve as fish, and pork or lamb dishes are nearly always on the menu.

The Portuguese are very fond of their desserts which tend to be various combinations of almonds, figs, honey and eggs  - Arroz doce (sweet rice pudding); Bolinhos de massa de amêndoa (little cakes of marzipan) in various shapes like fruits, vegetables, fish  and flowers; Pudim de amêndoa  (almond pudding); Bolachas de mel (little honey cakes) and figs stuffed with chocolate or almonds are all typical.

Night Life

There are plenty of clubs, discos and numerous bars and restaurants in Praia da Rocha along Avenida Tomás Cabreira and because it is such a popular holiday area there is plenty of choice on the menus. If you like to start the day with a full English breakfast or fancy a tasty tuna steak for lunch, there will be somewhere to choose. There are several cafés along the beach itself, all easily accessible from the wooden walkway that runs from end to end, so you don't even need to leave the beach while the sun is up!
